"...in quietness and trust is your strength"

Isaiah 30:15

Last Autumn, Rinne and I stumbled onto another unexpected gift: a forgotten demo of O Lord We Ask, a prayer song I wrote years ago.

We were visiting dear friends at their lake home in Wisconsin, praying the clearer, cleaner air would provide much needed relief.

The photo above shows the winding entrance to their home.

As we pulled in—hearing the now familiar welcoming crunch of pebbles and stones beneath our tires, birds singing as if they're personally greeting us,

beautiful vistas revealing themselves— it's as if we were entering a fresh new world.

One late afternoon, sitting on their couch in the great room—which has a magnificent view of Lake Michigan—Rinne was searching for something entirely unrelated on our laptop when she found the demo.

Before the song was even halfway through, we suddenly realized how deeply the lyrics fit the season we’re trudging through...

like a reminder prepared for us long before we knew we’d need it

We started the song again, and the moment we heard the words,

You who gave the universe…

Rinne happened to look up—and there arcing over Lake Michigan was a resplendent rainbow.

Numinous -

a deep sense of divinity, holiness, a mysterious spiritual power inspiring awe and wonder.

She turned toward me...leaning in close...whispering,

“Your singing is like a film score for what's unfolding

right in front of us...

in the stillness....

almost like it's

just for us...

thank You Jesus."

We’ve never seen a rainbow this Present.

So near

we didn't move

as if moving would make it disappear

Peace making its way into our bodies and souls like a warm gentle breeze

on a cool day

settling us

a palpable reminder of His Nearness

And to think—we almost missed it entirely.

How many quiet wonders do we miss while spending so much of our lives looking down at our devices?

These past 13 years have carried more loss, struggle, and crisis than our hearts want to remember. The truth is, it's unrelenting.

Heidi—when she has the leg strength—takes us on our morning walks. Our girlie sets a slow, deliberate pace. Rinne and I sing, pray, and talk through scripture together.

It steadies all three of us.

And it helps push back the fear and heaviness a little.

We're keenly aware that you too may be walking through a season that feels longer, heavier, or more uncertain than you ever expected.

Our hope is that this prayer song might give voice to your own longings.

O Lord We Ask

You who gave the universe

And planted thoughts in human hearts

You hear the groans of every soul

And in this room I know you feel them

Lord we bow before You now

May we breathe Your presence here

Like Solomon before we ask

For victory or more success

Oh Lord we ask

We ask for wisdom

Help us Lord as we go forth

To find Your strength along the way

Like at the Red Sea where Moses stood

We hold our breath and take a step

Oh Lord we ask

To feel Your power

Like Paul was blinded by Your light

And then the scales fell from his eyes

Oh let Your presence make us tremble

And move our hearts to change the world

Oh Lord we ask

For transformation

And Father as we journey on

We trust Your navigating hand

We trust Your guidance

and protection

The perfection of Your vision

We submit our hopes to You

Separate the wheat from chaff

And now align us with Your Spirit

And hear our longing when we ask

Oh Lord

We ask

We ask

for wisdom

for transformation

to feel your power

amen

________

May you not feel rushed toward answers.

May what has been stirred in you be honored, not explained away.

May the questions you carry be held gently, and the silence not feel empty.

May you sense that God is near—not only in what you understand,

but in what is still unfolding.

And may that be enough for this moment.

With love and hope...

Shalom, shalom...
